sends - Terminal

A rare weekend post indeed, but Andrew Fusca has constructed a musical cocktail worthy of curing every heavy head on this frosty Sunday afternoon. ‘Terminal’, taken from a forthcoming, yet to be titled EP, combines ice-cold house beats with breathless vocals and a shimmering guitar backdrop. The track conjures up a vivid image of glistening disco balls and enraptured crowds; so in many ways it’s perfectly suited to this - and any other - weekend.

PARISWHEEL: DRAGON

DRAGON’ spends its first 2 and a half minutes experimenting; acquainting itself with all the tools available, so to speak. With thirty seconds left to go, it suddenly unleashes what the listener’s been eagerly awaiting: A flummoxing, gigantic chorus. Pre-explosion, we’re given sonical snippets of what’s to come; tribal drum hits; synths dripping with sweat; bold declarations of “I am fire breathing” from PARISWHEEL’s vocalist. But then it clicks. Everything falls into place like a layered brick formation - perfectly put together pop, albeit the kind you have to be patient with at first.

Zack Christ: Hacho Steadybeat No.1

Rarely is a song so well-produced that you feel the urge to separate each millisecond of sound and examine every single one individually. Danish producer Zack Christ could be compared to the equally mindblowing Lapalux for encouraging such an impulsive reaction, but on the basis of ‘Hacho Steadybeat No.1’, he’s less scatty, more tame with his application of samples. A stop-start technique that encourages your blood to circuit that little bit faster, it’s something of a work of art.

Spirit Sisters: Up

Both of MFM have spent the past week or so hitching around America, seeing all there is to see before returning to face days of jet-lag. ‘Up’ seems like that wake up call I’ve just been begging for. ‘He’ was the most gracious and glistening of songs and it left us floored; ‘Up’ gives us that helping hand back onto Earth. It continues Spirit Sisters’ rise from producing Balam Acab-indebted electronica, without the slightest of imperfections. [JM]

MFM018 - Music Fan’s Mic Podcast - 07-09-2011

The average podcaster isn’t a fan of picking favourites. Jon Hillcock, the best in the business, will often be found fretting when a listener cites their preferred track on one of his ‘casts, because they’re almost ignoring the rest of the competition.
I’m always in a similar boat; always eager to know that people approved of all of the selections, not just one in particular. But this week I found myself in a strange situation, whereby I enjoyed putting together the first 7 of the final cut, but the whole time I was making the podcast, I was becoming more and more excited about the final track, Grouper’s Water People’. For me, Liz Harris has made a very special track indeed and it closes this week’s MFM Podcast on a sombre, beautiful note. That’s not to say - and I can not stress this enough - that those before it are not of a similarly wonderful ilk. There are some extremely talented producers who base their work on digital platforms (Beat Culture, Sun Glitters, Sina), and there are some wonderful artists who are fresh from releasing an album or are just on the brink of doing so (Selebrities, HTRK). All in all, for me, this is the strongest bunch of tracks we’ve had in a long time.

Spirit Sisters: He

It’s a title which reminds me, somewhat unfortunately, of a very notorious piece of writing on the Drowned In Sound website (those who keep in check with the site’s online community will know what I’m talking about). He. An accompanying piece for the dramatic, string-swept ‘She’, this track locks arms with its sibling in an act of instinct. Female vocals, as the title may suggest, are replaced with male ones; equally as delicate; equally as integral to the song’s mood. Spirit Sisters are the real deal. [JM]
