Analog d r i f t: Manuel Antonio

It’s possible for me to be enamoured enough with a single second (or in this case, sample) of a song, so much so that I have to post it. ‘Manuel Antonio’, one of many works by Oklahoma producer Brad Holden, draws you in with a sweep (and it is, a literal sweep) of shimmering guitars. He repeats this sample every 5 seconds or so (if you scroll back through the rest of his souncloud page, you’ll see that this is a tactic he employs with several of his otherworldly works), until you’re well and truly shrouded beneath hundreds of layers of dreamy guitars and pent-up drum patterns.

Swiss Alps: Riptide Lore

Nothing is known about these Pennsylvania guitar pop merchants, aside from the fact that ‘Riptide Lore’ was put up on bandcamp as a means of “snagging” the band name (and it’s a sweet band name, I agree). The song itself is the vital ingredient for a perfect day; gorgeous guitar lines shift in and out of tune mercilessly, as hushed vocals swelter in the background. Now excuse me as I take to the slopes with this playing in my ears (note: I’ve never been skiing. I would probably prefer skydiving).

Some Gorgeous Accident: Panorama

Tumblr-veteran Pierreism points out that Some Gorgeous Accident, far from being another bunch of cultured so-and-sos from Brooklyn, are based in the Philippines. Perhaps being so detached from the shoegaze, guitar-pop American sound has contributed in part towards their truly unique, undeniably beautiful “dreamgaze” pop. And that name. It’s the fitting companion to a song like ‘Panorama’, lavished in gently evolving atmospherics and gorgeous guitar lines. The band have nearly one follower per song on their soundcloud account. Sort it out.

Spanish Prisoners - Know No Violence

Spirited, late-night by the fireplace kind of music… Brooklyn-hailing Spanish Prisoners sound like a close-knit bunch.

Sweeping guitar lines join hands with tight, tap-tap percussion and vocals swim on top of the surface; half Avey Tare, half Pomegranates. Taken from a forthcoming debut album, ‘Gold Fools’, it’s one of most flexible, daring and downright beautiful pop songs of the year. [JM]

mpfree: Still Corners - Endless Summer

words: Jamie Milton

London’s Still Corners have created something of considerable beauty, comparable to the finer, slender to the touch moments of Blonde Redhead, within one of their first releases.

Precious, ethereal vocals open with the line “listen to the tide, it pulls us in”, whilst reverbed pounding drums enter and a climactic chorus fits in one gallant synth line after the other.

Boring By The Sea, of whom we have to thank for this find, mention that an album could be out by the end of the year. If elegance on this scale can be replicated throughout, something momentous awaits.
