Tezeta - A Night

Capturing the racing heartbeat of every single club at 4am on a Saturday night, ‘A Night’ is the euphoric, breathtaking work of Canadian Joe Roth (aka. Tezeta). Like a concentrated mixture of all of M83’s best moments, it steers a gorgeous vocal sample into unchartered territory, blending tropical guitar hooks with a pulse-like, throbbing beat. Totally stunning.

Verttigo: Autumn Dreams

I don’t want the vocalists of Verttigo to take this as a sour criticism, but a huge part of me wants to see Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino appearing out of nowhere to sing on these songs. Three rough demos from the Canadian, shoegaze-enhanced troupe have enough promise to suggest that maybe, one day, we’ll see Makino collaborating with the group. Heady dreams pushed aside though, for the time being we’ve been gifted with a hugely promising selection of introductory efforts, our pick of the bunch being the song placed at the top of the post, ‘Autumn Dreams’, on the basis of its sheer immediacy.

Doldrums: Endless Winter

Canada’s Doldrums is clearly influenced by Portishead, Kid A-era Radiohead and modern day electronica. In simple terms, this means that I am going to fall head over brogues in love with whatever he writes himself. The ‘Endless Winter’ EP confirms as much, moving from an obnoxious “saay aaaaahhh!” chant through to five experimental movements, all of which carry some minor flaws. These flaws are wrestled aside however when you immerse yourself in the actual audacity of what this guy’s set out to do and the excitable results of his adventures. Take the EP’s title track as a fine example: similar to Yorke and co.”s ‘Backdrifts’ but with an added urgency and sense of desire. The most beautiful take from a quite staggering first work.

The Wilderness of Manitoba: Orono Park

There are some songs that try far too hard to get you to love them, and then there are those that are so effortless that you can’t help but be completely charmed. This absolute beauty from Toronto-based quintet The Wilderness of Manitoba falls into the latter category with no difficulty whatsoever. The swoon-worthy vocal interplay that makes up much of ‘Orono Park ’sfirst two minutes is a far more effective hook than you’d ever give it credit for, and if you’re not humming or tapping along by the time drums enter around the three-minute mark, something’s definitely off. The album, ‘When You Left the Fire’, has been making waves in Canada and the US (and rightly so); it’s due for a UK release before the year’s out, we assume - and we hope, as we can’t wait to hear more from it. AUDIOVISUALS///Matt & Kim - Cameras

It’s great when a brilliant video accompanies a brilliant song. Admittedly, this doesn’t seem to happen very often - we’re having difficulty recalling such a combination from recent times - but Matt & Kim have delivered double the amount of usual goods with the clip for the lead single from ‘Sidewalks’ (out April 4th). The song is ‘Cameras’ (out two weeks earlier on 21st March). Nothing more needs to be said, because it speaks for itself. The album is going to be a knockout if the first two songs we’ve heard are anything to go by. There is nothing but the highest of standards here. In other words: result.
