Gotten your giddy Canadian synth-pop fix today yet? I hadn’t either, but I am delighted to announce the return of Matt & Kim, who have recently released the first fruits of their third record, ‘Sidewalks’ (due out March 28th - that’s going to be a long three months!). The pair have always reminded me of Tokyo Police Club to an extent - no kidding, they’re also Canadian and they also specialise in upbeat, hook-heavy pop songs - but as far as comeback singles go, this is miles ahead of ‘Breakneck Speed’. It might be a little too sugary for some tastes, sure, but the way the song gradually unfolds, introducing strings and brass, over which Matt (Johnson’s) confident vocals soar, is irresistible - and as for the song’s synth-laden finale, if it doesn’t bring a smile to your face, do yourself a favour and check if you have a pulse.
