Music Fan’s Mic’s Albums of the Year: Day 14

Halves - It Goes, It Goes (Forever And Ever)

I don’t think I need to say too much about this record. Most of it has already been said, of course. I don’t need to tell you how its complexity and depth eclipses the majority of debut records I’ve heard in the last few years, or how painstakingly crafted the album was (it is the result of almost two years’ work).

What I feel the need to tell you about, however, is how it comes across live. Seeing the band in as atmospheric a setting as I was given the opportunity to (the Workman’s Club) is something akin to a life-changing experience. I’d never experienced a gig of such quality or such hair-raising intensity before, and I’ll be a happy man if anything comes even close to it.

They’re probably the best band in Ireland right now. It is perhaps a shame that their music might not reach an audience of the size it deserves, but emerging Irish acts have always had to live with this, and unless their music has an amazing amount of commercial appeal (*waves at The Script*) they often don’t make it in the U.K. They get by though, maturing and developing and adding as much to the domestic scene as they can. Just like this lot are going to do, if their debut is any indication. They may not set the world alight, but Halves are nonetheless a band to be treasured. [G’OM]
