Music Fan’s Mic’s Albums of the Year: Day 9

Delphic - Acolyte

There’s something about this album that I still can’t put my finger on despite having listened to it for the first time around this time last year. I’m not sure why I love it quite as much as I do, but I certainly have my reasons. One of them is that I stepped away from this album almost entirely for a good chunk of 2010, and it’s only now that I’m rediscovering it.

It saw out 2009 and saw in 2010. For me, there are memories attached to ‘Acolyte’, of all different kinds, but the thing that stands out the most is that there is a thrilling ‘album’ hidden underneath ten ‘songs’. ‘Acolyte’ was both immediate and a grower. With those sort of albums, things have a habit of gradually falling into place.

Such was the case here. Shifting focus away from its singles - even though ‘Doubt’ was one of the best of the year -  this record set the bar high and exceeded expectations, the concrete proof of this being its title track. It might just be their finest moment thus far. There are plenty of avenues that could be explored on the second LP - which is to be worked on next year. Such was the diversity in ‘Acolyte’ that it can certainly be considered the complete package. [GO’M]
