The Fanclub: Poets Die Too

Words: Gareth O’Malley

Generally, a great debut single (coupled with a decent amount of exposure) can mark a band out as one with potential. Such was the case when London quintet The Fanclub opened their account back in July with ‘Madman’, displaying their colourful, dramatic indie rock in fine style.

It’s immensely satisfying, therefore, to learn that just-released second single, the cinematic, maudlin affair that is ‘Poets Die Too’, builds quite considerably on the foundations laid down by the debut.

‘Cinematic’ is the byword: sweeping string arrangements add an extra dimension to the superb hook, which is then itself supplemented by stately drums and a rather triumphant guitar-driven finale. A stunning chorus is very much in evidence as well, showcasing once again the group’s knack for a cutting lyric: ‘I’ve become a philosopher after an unholy amount of wine’.

The Fanclub are two for two, and ‘Poets Die Too’ has ensured that the momentum building towards the release of the album next spring can only increase.
