Hugh Major: Over

Sometimes acts you follow on Soundcloud delete all of their tracks, almost inexplicably. Previously prominent, sending out one magnificent effort after the other, they then replace the empty space with a single track. This tends to be the sign of a label giving advice: save your best for the album, drip-feed the flock of fans, etc. 17 year-old Hugh Major wasn’t as prominent as say, Lapalux for example, but he’s shed himself of a couple of earlier efforts. If this is Major’s weapon of choice, ‘Over’ serves as an ideal appetite-whetter, one that allows us to forget his recent remixes of Lucy Rose, the xx, instead looking ahead to a promising future. A glowing rendition of gloomy atmospherics and skewed vocal-samples; it’s an impeccable start.
