Warm Speakers: Youth

About as far removed from chillwave comparisons as is possible for a synth-pop track, Warm Speakers have produced something far more substantial than work of old. The ‘Mezcal Noon’ EP, released earlier on in the year, captured the summer mood but achieved little more than that, bar a successful Washed Out tribute and some “filler” or sorts. That might sound like a harsh criticism but it’s only in the context of ‘Youth’, Patrick Berlinquette’s latest effort. Stylish bass grooves rinse vocals that come close to resembling Beck, before a sweet, drifting synth backdrop begins to dominate the picture. This is a proper pop song, beyond every foolish expectation I had of Patrick’s work beforehand.
