Doldrums: Endless Winter
Canada’s Doldrums is clearly influenced by Portishead, Kid A-era Radiohead and modern day electronica. In simple terms, this means that I am going to fall head over brogues in love with whatever he writes himself. The ‘Endless Winter’ EP confirms as much, moving from an obnoxious “saay aaaaahhh!” chant through to five experimental movements, all of which carry some minor flaws. These flaws are wrestled aside however when you immerse yourself in the actual audacity of what this guy’s set out to do and the excitable results of his adventures. Take the EP’s title track as a fine example: similar to Yorke and co.”s ‘Backdrifts’ but with an added urgency and sense of desire. The most beautiful take from a quite staggering first work.
