Still Flyin’ - A Party In Motion (EP)

Self described as ‘Hammjamm’ - when a good time gets better - Still Flyin’ are something of a musical oddity. With a DIY band aesthetic like no other and their current line up’s size – made up from people from all over the world - matching that of a full rugby union team, Still Flyin’ are band for the everyday person, with everyday concerns; Beer, high fives and partying with your mates.

There’s no pretence here; behold a collection of songs, by genuine people for genuine people. The EP is effectively the soundtrack to a chilled out gathering with your closest friends, with an 80’s infused vibe that, wait for it, never feels forced or tired. It all perfectly plays to a sense of self-nostalgia, of remembering all those parties and happenings of bygone summer holidays and encapsulates in such clarity what it’s truly like to be growing up.

What’s remarkable - considering the amount and the array of people involved - is just how consistent, in terms of style, the whole EP is. None of the tracks feel out of place, though in terms of quality the EP is somewhat less cohesive. Whether for affect or not the vocals can at times feel desperately underwhelming with the musical accompaniment failing to offer much else either. The EP is arguably sandwiched by its best tracks. ‘Victory Walker’ sees a breakdown and spoken word segment that’s so passionately haunting it genuinely sends shivers down the spine. ‘Walker’ meanwhile creates a musical landscape of stirring beauty that perfectly demonstrates the bands dynamic and manages to steer clear of being self indulgent.

For those of you who don’t take things too seriously; go out and grab a four pack, or several, a bunch of close mates, whack this on the stereo and reminisce on all the great times you’ve had and ‘remember how it felt to be a kid’.
