mpfree: Hosannas - When We Were Young

words: Jamie Milton
When you visit a country that’s completely new to you, however much you try to fight it, you suffer from a certain amount of culture shock - for me, it was seeing the hustle and bustle of Bangkok’s city streets distancing itself from the complete contrast of seeing the glum commuter faces walking across the Thames. I’ve never had pop music make me feel a slight sense of culture shock however, but Hosannas’ provide that completely new flavour - ‘When We Were Young’ is really quite unique.
Yes, there are some hints of Wild Beasts and Tapes ‘n Tapes throughout the song’s four minutes, but within this spiky, guitar-focused and crowded effort you hear one polar opposite sit next to another; one normality next to one culture shock. It’s crowdy and it’s dense but once you’ve pushed your head through the clouds, you come to appreciate and make sense of this greatly ambitious track.
