Shells: Arctic
On a day like this, where the curtains are begging to be pulled and the winter chill creeps through the cracks of your bedroom window, you begin to yearn for the kind of music to accompany this new, brisk sensation. ‘Arctic’, half of Khalid Rafique aka. Shells’ first body of work since the Pastels EP, bathes inside the frozen lakes, sitting comfortably within the permafrost. Exquisite, soft-to-the-touch female vocals etch themselves in to a firm backdrop made up of skittering synths and fragile percussion. Unlike this year’s EP, there are few obvious references points to fellow electronic artists. This is a brand new take on the sound of a cold night in London, or a tortuous, breathtaking week out with the glaciers.
