Twin Sister: Spain

Most will hail Twin Sister’s first full-length, In Heaven, as some kind of final piece in a jigsaw previously laid out by a string of well-received EPs. It should be observed, however, with the greatest attention, that these New Yorkers have done their utmost to showcase a previously veiled creative side.
Spain’ is a song that was flung together, all of a sudden, during the album’s recording sessions. But it comes across like its the final, momentous song that defies anyone trigger-happy onlooker, ready to sling forth the ‘dreampop’ tag the moment they first hear the band. More James Bond soundtrack than sleepy, nighttime pop song, it’s the record’s standout because it shows a band challenging themselves when they weren’t even required to.

I spoke to the band’s guitarist, Eric Cardona, last month for This Is Fake DIY, and he told me about the song specifically:

That one was really fun. While writing the melody we thought it sounded kinda spooky which is interesting for us because we never tend to write songs in the minor key. That was one of the tracks where we just played it a couple of times and didn’t really think about it too much. Usually we’re very conscious of the rhythm section and what everyone is doing but that one was kind of a free-for-all. And it’s my Dad’s favourite; he says it sounds like a heavy Beatles song!
