Wild Beasts: Thankless Thing
Hayden Thorpe has expanded my vocabulary like few other artists have - today’s word of the day is “curmudgeonly”, which, I should have known, refers to someone being ill-tempered and difficult to be around. Definition promptly explored, it seems Thorpe is continuing to break out of his skin into a more candid, well-natured man; accompanying Wild Beasts’ deft palette with less of the old fashioned growl, more of the whimsical purr and inaudible sob. Wild Beasts can remove the “beast” from their name, if they so please - ‘Smother’ and this new bonus track show a band in the process of combining a more intimate sound with a gentle, calming shift.
