Quick Fix: Baths - Cerulean

words: Jamie Milton
[released on Anticon]
An emergence of the ‘chillwave’ genre has been met with hard criticism, early dismissal and even satire. But in beneath the cliched beach-landscape artwork and the processed synths lies genuine invention. It’s unfortunate for Will Wiesenfeld (aka. Baths) that he’s been tagged amongst a genre which he owes very little to. His debut full-length, ‘Cerulean’ uses samples with real zest, providing beautiful textures to sit amongst sharp beats and jolted bass rhythms. The cacophonous ‘Aminals’ is thrillingly unpredictable, the more sedated ‘Maximalist’ gives more gentle treatment to the ears. It’s a breathtaking listen, more beautiful than the majority of albums you’ll hear all year.
